IN WHICH: the proverbial shit hits the proverbial fan

My mac crashed. No, really.

I've lost:
  1. Three year's worth of college work. Including, but not limited to: term papers, magazine articles, an entire portfolio of published work, pages, and pages, and pages, and pages of work.
  2. 2,479 songs in 49 different languages divided among 314 artists, 129 albums, and 39 genres. My iPod still has these songs, but this is a treasure that I've gathered over many, many years. Included what has to be the greatest compilation ever (Nina Simone), an awesome track for my six-mile runs every day (AC/DC, baby, AC/DC), and Bon Jovi for shits and giggles.
  3. All the data from my thesis that I carefully reformatted to fit journal format (you try labeling seventeen gels using Preview. YOU JUST TRY.)
  4. Pictures of home, friends, and places.
Oh, and: 13 chapters of "In Good Company," 4 chapters of "A life Interrupted," and some of my original work.

Because I think I'm the shit and don't back-up as frequently as I should. I.e., the last time I backed up my hard drive was three years ago, when I got my mac to begin with.

I swear, I'm not making this shit up.

I'm trying to find directions to the closest Benjamin Moore supplier (backstory: I recently moved, and all the walls look awful, so I'm painting over just about everything.) My Mac slows down, and then gives me a black screen with the ominous message: You need to restart your computer now. So I do.

Only, when I turn my laptop back on again, I get this big grey screen with a question mark, blinking, blinking, blinking away at me. I think: Not good. I take it to an apple store, and it turns out? My hard drive has completely crashed. A god-awful, irreparable, ill-timed, and monumental crash that wiped out every inch of data. The only people who can recover my data is a company that charges a couple grand for each case.

So.

i was seriously just about to reply back on how i couldn't wait for you to start writing again. this is so unforunate not only about the writing but your college work and music and everything. my pc crashed recently but somehow i accidentally (luckily) saved all my stuff to one random flashdrive but i know how terrifying and awful it is to think you've (or more terrifyingly so, to have actually) lost so much stuff. i hope you find a way to recover your stuff without spending ridiculous amounts of money, god knows those people don't need it.

I'm glad that you were able to save your data. I never really understood just how awful something like this until it happened, and now I'm utterly paralyzed trying to recover my work. =( And the company gave me a quote of two grand. Uuugh.

...T-this...! ;A; (tl;dr) Man, how much of that college work do you need? I mean, you don't need all of it, do you? I'm crossing my fingers (and toes, legs and arms) that you don't have too much that you need to get back if it's irretrievable. Re: music - so you have all the songs on your iPod or just most of them and you won't have your ACDC anymore (NONONO)? I think there's a way of putting the songs on your iPod onto your computer, but you have to rename everything because they get messed up in the process.
I have no suggestions about how you could possibly get your thesis back and just thinking about all the time and effort makes me cringe in sympathy. The more I read this, the more I hope the company can get all your data back and, probably more importantly, that you can get the money for it. (When you say "each case" do you mean "each hard drive" or...?) Pictures... You wouldn't possibly have them on a CD or something would you? I mean, I know you say you didn't back up... uh, at all? But still! ...yeah... Friends might have them? Did you upload them? [flails helplessly] Really wishing I could give you more support.
And I don't want to sound selfish or anything, but I am weeping inside at the loss of all your stories.
Honestly, how does this kind of thing even happen? What kind of technology decides it wants to give up on life just like that? >< Sorry about the long comment; hoping everything goes well for you! ***

You're right. There are ways to get back some things, but others...I just didn't bother backing up my writing. I only backed up my assignments that were important, but NEVER my writing because it never even OCCURRED to me. No joke. The company just gave me a quote for recovery. It's two grand, which...you know. College budget and everything.

But your post was very helpful. I'm going to try to get music from my iPod onto my iTunes like you suggested. =)

O.o!!! how much money will cost to go to that company!? maybe we could do a collect or something!!

May 27 2010, 22:53:51 UTC 1 year ago

Two grand, they said. And you're so sweet to offer for a collect, but I don't know if it's a worthy cause =) I can't believe I'm so paralyzed without my laptop!!

That's so horrible!!!! :(
Poor you! But I guess, sometimes computers can't be helped -_-'
I guess I'll never see the ending of this fic (because if I were you, I would have lost hope and *not* want to re-write it again).
Though I'll look forward to any sasu/naru work you'll write XD

THIS CRASH? I'M GOING TO OWN IT AND MAKE IT MY BITCH.

I remember the basic plot of my stories, but the chapters in all my stuff are pretty long, so the details I'll have to reinvent I think. Mostly, though: I love "In Good Company" waaaay too much to abandon it. There will be chapters, I swear.

(Also: That dedication one-shot? It's still coming. Your summer still trumps mine in terms of how difficult it is!)

I was so happy when I saw that you'd updated your lj, but. This. I mean, really, Apple? I feel terrible for you! And devastated that 13(!) chapters of IGC were lost. Hope you can find a way to recover everything without shelling out two grand.

oh dear :O

I'm so sorry to hear this :( I hope they recover all your information even if they don't get back all of it I hope they get back your thesis data at the very least i can't imagine the frustration that you must have gone through...

on a different note... time to invest in an external hard-drive :O (or a PC hehe) but yeah, this happened to my roommate and I learned the lesson of backing everything up on to an external hard-drive (they can be pretty affordable, esp. with discounts :D)

Hang in there! I hope they find your stuff :)

Dear lord... Apple what have you done. It's great to know you're still alive and continuing "A life Interrupted" though, "bridge", still after all this time, remains my favorite fanfic. But... what. the. hell. college work and music lost? Go ahead, take some time off and find a good therapist, I know how bad that feels. Fucking macs.

[info]valleyproject

June 5 2010, 18:42:57 UTC 1 year ago

I found the best therapist in the world. His name is Jack Daniels, and he's got a great sense of humor. =)

(Good news--I was able to recover my music from my iPod, and much of my college work by going through emails and old usb drives...So far, not too bad actually...)

I just found out about your hard drive crashing from the scrum, and I have to say... MY GRIEF IS PROFOUND.

This is an earth-shattering kind of heartbreak. I'm pretty sure I saw nothing but swirling darkness there for a moment... I had been so looking forward to all of your work... especially A life interrupted *weeps*

What's worse is all your music and photos are gone too! D: I wish I could help you with the hard drive, my father has done a few miracles with data recovery before - but we live in New Zealand, so I don't think that's much of an option eh? DDDD:

*hug* hope you get back on your feet soon.

My face must have shown the same reaction cause when the apple genius bar guys saw my expression, they were so nice to me all of a sudden. They even offered to buy me a drink, and then kept apologizing.

Sorry about A Life Interrupted. I know I'm an annoying writer and don't update as often as I should, but I promise the stories will be finished. I've already gotten back my music and photos, and I've started to recover other data from my emails/usbs/etc. So the writing isn't too far behind, I promise!

But I'm going to finish writing them. I don't like leaving stories lying around like that (mostly because I don't like it when other authors do!)

Hard Drive Recovery.

I realize that it is probably too late but if you haven't re-formatted the drive this page has a trick with a fire-wire cable and a second mac that may let you recover your file. http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/how-to/tips/4294038 Let me know if this works for you. I was able to recover all of my data using a cable and my cousin imac. Maybe you can too?

Awww, I sympathise! I keep everything important in a portable drive now. Good luck and should you find a solution please post. I'm having a lot of difficulty with computers too.

I spilt coffee - scorching freshly boiled coffee onto my laptop and to fix? $1092.98 it burnt out the vga, mainboard, keyboard etc...as I had kept it running after the spill. After I had cleaned up everything continued to work.

PLEASE NOTE FROM NOW ON, REMOVE BATTERY AFTER A SPILL

I still check your page insistently, hoping and believing I'll find ALI soon updated he he he :)

Finally happy belated birthday

PS I managed to halve the cost of fixing my laptop by sheer persistence and PRAYER! Believe it and hopefully same works for you :)

Wow, I can't believe I never commented on this! I remember reading about this when I first saw it and going DDD: but um. Yeah. Did you get the majority of your stuff back yet? How are things doing with your computer now? I actually lost all of my new music on my comp a few months ago after I reconfigured it and basically forgot to copy my music onto my flashdrive.... over 30 gigs of music :( but I mean, it's totally cool now. Hope your computer (and you! <3) are doing okayyy!

Hahah anyway this is a totally random comment. Just thought of checking up on you since I reread the entire Bridge series today cus it was too hot outside and I was bored :P

I just discovered "In Good Company", and D: at your loss. Really. :( :( D:

I'm glad you're back to writing - especially since it doesn't seem like you're going to get your Hard Disk recovered.

Incidentally, I'm typing this on a Mac. I thank you for a reminder on the importance of backing up my data.

please don't take me as a nagging reviewer...but as a fan of your stories, i wondered how you're faring with your fics post-crash..? any news would be appreciated, whether you're taking a hiatus or in the process of writing. =)

Oh fucking hell....

How fucking slow am I? I just read this and it's like 2011.... Fuck... And I mean that. Fuck. I feel for you. Seriously. I hope things have improved and you've managed to recover most of what you've lost. Losing material of thesis is just.... not something one would want to think about and I'm just nervously backing up all my stuff now.

Pain

I don't even want to know what that feels like. I really think I'd just off myself or something or just quit computers.
I think it's because I'm paranoid, but I have an aimini so when I have anything, and I mean ANYTHING, I upload it there. If it's something for me I keep it private, or if it's something I don't care for, in terms of personal-ness, I let others download it. I also have a flash drive, 8GB but I'm going to hopefully upgrade soon, that I save stuff on, and now a Windows Live where you can save documents onto it (kind of like the gmail thing). What happened to you is like my worst nightmare. I hope you get everything, or at least most of it, back.
